Extra credit opportunity!!

For those of you who keep up with this blog, here's another chance at extra credit!

Tonight at 5:30, ECU SCREENS is showing Promised Land, a film over hydraulic fracking with a public forum to follow. If you go to the film, you can get 2 points. If you write me a paragraph over the film, you will receive 3 more points. If you attend the forum after the film and write at least a paragraph about things you find interesting/confusing/etc. and describe some of the discussion that took place in the forum, you could receive anywhere from 5-10 extra points. SO, if you find your grade is starting to decline, here's anywhere from 2-15 extra points.

For the Rest of the Semester.....

Those of you who attended class today already know how the rest of the semester is going to pan out, but for those of you who missed, here it is:

11/20 Essay 4 DUE.  Remember to bring a hard copy to class and email me an electronic copy in the form of a .doc or .docx file. Points were deducted in Essay 3 for not following these guidelines.

11/25 Individual Conferences (email me/come to class on Thursday to pick a time) Those who were in class today have already chosen their conference times. Essay 4 will be handed back to you on this day, and revisions to this essay are MANDATORY. So, if you don't come to your conference, you don't receive your paper, and you receive a 0 for your revisions because you don't know what to revise (which will NOT be good for your grade). If you miss your conference, your final grade on Essay 4 will have 10 points deducted from it.  In This Conference: We'll discuss essay 4 and revisions that can be made to the essay. Please have questions and concerns over your essay(s) written down and ready for your conference, so we can address them during this time. If we have time, we can also discuss previous essays if you plan to revise them. If you DO plan to revise them, please bring your graded drafts with you to the conference.

This conference is worth double the participation points. You won't want to skip out on this.

11/27 NO CLASS- Thanksgiving

12/2 Revisions 1-3 due. These revisions arent mandatory, but if you choose to revise them, have them done by this day. The only thing that these revisions can do is IMPROVE your grade, and if you go to the Writing Center, you'll get bonus points for them!

12/4 Essay 4 FINAL due. Remember to bring a hard copy to class and email me an electronic copy in the form of a .doc or .docx file.

12/11: FINAL 8-11a. Your final will consist of a few questions over some of the selected readings we had in class (if you read them, you should be fine), basic MLA formatting, and there will also be a written portion of your exam. Please be prepared for this as it is 10% of your final grade.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Schedule Change: Peer Reviews TUESDAY November 18.

Because of low attendance today, students who came to class got more feedback from me on their papers, got Essay 3 returned to them, AND they received bonus points for coming to class.

If you missed class, I still suggest you head to the Writing Center for help (because most of you missed due to struggling with your overall essay). I still need rough drafts sent to me TODAY to receive partial credit for your rough draft. If I don't receive it, you won't get more than half credit on your rough draft.

With all that being said, we WILL be doing Peer Reviews on Tuesday. If you don't make it to this one, you WILL be required to go to the Writing Center (see previous post about what all you must do to receive points). These peer reviews are beneficial for you (and they're weighted heavier), so missing them is hurting you.

So, PLEASE bring 3 copies of your essay with you on Tuesday. If you were in class today, please feel free to revise your essays before bringing in new copies for peer reviews. This will help make your papers even stronger. The due date for Essay 4 will NOT be extended due to the peer review extension. You'll need to make sure you revise your paper using your peer reviews as your guide.

As a REMINDER: Your FIRST final draft of essay 4 is due on Thursday, November 20th. I plan to have these back to you before Thanksgiving break, so you can have time to revise these essays (which is required).

If you have questions, please contact me.

Rough Drafts DUE

This is your reminder to get your rough drafts into me electronically before the start of class on Thursday, November 13th. This is especially crucial for those of you who may not be able to make it to class.

We WILL be doing peer reviews tomorrow, so please come prepared with three copies of your essay. If you don't have your paper, it makes it difficult to do peer reviews and you'll be required to go to the writing center (and do all that is stated below) to receive credit for the peer review day.

If you can't make it to peer reviews, please make sure you get to the writing center to make up for the missed peer review day. To receive credit for the peer review day (if you miss it), you must not only have them send the Writing Center form to me, but you also MUST write a paragraph over what help you received at the Writing Center and how you applied it.  These missed days add up, and they can make or break your overall grade.

If you all have any other questions, please contact me.

Thanks!

Class is Canceled 11-11-2014

Hey all,

Class is canceled today (don't seem too disappointed!). I'm sick and I have an 8 year old in the same boat with me. BUT, even though class is canceled, you still have work to do!

Peer Reviews are on Thursday. You need to have a rough draft ready to share. If you're struggling with citations, check Purdue OWL (there's a link to your right) on how to do in-text citations AND how to put together your works cited page. This is going to count a lot more than it did in previous essays, so do what you need to do to prepare! (we'll still keep going over it in class, so don't let it freak you out!)

ALSO, to receive points for today, I need you all to email me a link to an article you're using, and put the title of the article in the body of the email. Typically copying and pasting the link doesn't work, but I know (and Chelsea showed you) there's a way to email the things you find! This is due at 5:00pm TODAY.

If you haven't worked on your rough draft yet, I suggest you take the class period to go to one of the labs and work on it. I planned to use the computer lab in room 346 (at the end of the hall where we hold class in Horace Mann), so feel free to utilize it.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

For Tomorrow: 11/11/2014

If you can have access to your essay (if you've even started it), please bring that with you tomorrow.

We'll be working some on essay 4 in the lab, so having access to it could be REALLY helpful for you!

ALSO, for those of you who actually check this blog, there will be another ECU SCREENS National Theatre recorded performance this coming Friday, November 14th. Remember that you can receive extra participation points for attending, and even more participation points for writing a summary!

See you all tomorrow!
